Mumship

October 28th marked the release of Catz ‘n Dogz full length player on Dirty Bird sublabel Mothership. Those that keep an eye out for Mothership releases likely have put together most of the Stars of Zoo album as it’s been available in incrementally updated packs on Beatport for around 3 weeks now.

Even if you already have parts of the release, there’s a good reason to make a second investment in the complete LP. Mothership donates a sizeable portion of its profits to the Detroit Youth Foundation where kids can learn how to make electronic music (and all music) in downtown Detroit.
That, and the LP is bangin’.

Decks, Box & MBP

Check this dope new mix from like minded blogger pal Joee Irwin.

An ode to Richie Hawtin’s “Decks, EFX & 909.”  A lot of today’s
mixtapes are flawlessly sequenced together using computer software. Setting out to
make a DJ Mix in the spirit of the old days, Joee recorded his mix in one take, using the
same equipment that would be used in one of his energetic live sets: Turntables,
Serato, and a MacBook Pro: “Decks, Box & MBP.”

Once Upon A Time

A good pal of ours turned us on to the sounds of MHM1 a few weeks back and I’ve been compleatly obsessed with what I’ve heard from him since.

With a background writing graffiti and citing funk-based American electro as a source for influence, the budding Danish house and techno producer is already dripping with cool.. and things only get better when hearing his music.

Sophisticated, funky and above all unique, MHM1 is one to watch out for.. his release Bubububadub will be out on Tartelet Records within weeks.

Bristol Does It Better

Hot new studio mix from the new addition to the Bristol based Punch Drunk Records imprint. Tagging Gemmy’s freshman 12″ BK 2 The Future seams fitting as an influence stemming from 80’s synths and video games is quite noticeable.

Work This

New goods from our boy Alias. Hypnotic droning low end coupled with minimalist jackin’ drums and chopped up ghetto girl vocals deliver the heat straight to the dancefloor.

New Yorkers take notice, you can catch Alias live at the Palms Out CMJ showcase this friday at 205 Club. The show is RSVP only so make sure you get your name on that list to avoid disappointment.

Chaos Restored II

Last week we were invited by Buzzin Fly records to review the new forthcoming Mix CD Chaos Restored II crafted by Justin Martin. Unfortunately, on request of the label, we’re unable to post any music to accompany the review. Never the less, we’re massive fans of Justin Martin and Buzzin Fly and after having the mix on loop here for almost 5 days, it would be a shame not to give Chaos Restored 2 the love it thoroughly deserves.

If you’re hungry for MP3’s, I’d suggest messing about with our search feature to see what sort of Martin gems we’ve talked about in the past.

Just over 67 minutes deep, The San Francisco based Justin Martin follows up his acclaimed 2007 Chaos Restored CD with inventive programing that enforces his unique style that we’ve come to love so much.

Bordering on melodic, funky, somber and at times quirky, Martin’s musical world is inhabited with Dancing Bears, fueled on Hyphy and Bass Drum Jungle Music whispering lullabies about the warehouses of Detroit and bright lights of Berlin.

Expect the usual suspects to be heard, music from Loco Dice, StimmingMatthew Jonson and DJ Koze are nested between JT staples like the Mushrooms, Revox and Elephant Fight re-rubs. Also included is a sneak peak at his forthcoming wobbly bass release My Angelic Demons and rare appearance of the much sought after Radiohead Nude rmx.

Justin Martin’s Chaos Restored II hits stores on Buzzin Fly Records this October 29th.

Buy On Sight.

Do you mind

Released in June, Crazy Cousin’s refix of Do You Mind isn’t exactly black as night dubplate status anymore. Still, after checking a number of sources, it seams that it was overlooked by the vast majority of underground heads. Which sorta sucks because the tune is absolutely banging and should receive a hell of a lot more love on the dancefloor (stateside specifically).

My uncle used to say another word for Gin was “pantie remover”. He obviously never heard of Crazy Cousins.

Watch for Bongo Jam to hit webshops October 20th (wax release date October 13)

Paleface - Do you Mind (Crazy Cousins Remix)

Tape Hiss

Nicked this mix from Grievous Angel’s page last night and it’s since been on repeat all day. Circa 2000, this cassette rip is some bibblin’, tape hissing, badboy shit.

Grievous Angel’s Belief Is The Enemy 2XCD LP is out now.

New music from our boy Mathhead aka Passions today. Flexing those signature dirty drums, facemelting leads, NSFW lyrics and wobbly subs, Ferris shows us why he’s the undisputed king of the bass rave.

Song for Brian

A few weeks back we posted a mix from the soon to be notorious Gavin Burrows. To follow up, Gavin has sorted us with these two exclusive tunes at 320 and they’re totally wicked badass.

Taken from Gavin’s The Eagle Has Landed EP, Song for Brian and Husbands and Wives serve up the goods with some cheeky samples, punchy drums, and acid bass.

Enjoy!

Givin’ Thanks

Oh wow. what a super relaxing Canadian Thanksgiving long weekend! Lotsa of sleeping in, on-demand HBO reruns and a surplus of food has slowed productivity at CCHQ to a snails pace. Instead of being shocked back in to reality tomorrow morning, we thought it best to get warmed up and play a bit of catch up on the bits missed in the past few days.

In the beginning there was Jack, and Jack had a groove. And from this groove came a monster of an EP from AC Slater, pressed by our good friends at Palms Out Sounds and backed with remixes from Jack Beats, Scott Cooper, JakZ, Urchins, B. Rich and more.

This one has been big on dub for months now. Don’t sleep. pick up the entire EP here.

Mowgli’s back at it. This time Tricky’s Counsel Estate gets reworked into a low end wobbler complete with halftime breakdowns, tribal percussion and clean cuts.

Los Cangos Grande

Thou shall never blog in a drunken state. Is that a rule? I bet it is somewhere. Not here though. We blog under the influence of all types of mind altering shit. Booya.

Our boy XI (the sexiest man to ever walk the planet) has been messing about with some UK Funky lately. Although he’s deciphering this scene from half way across the world through a DSL line, our boy does a bang up job on K Rock alongside Cuts. Not exactly sure what any UK Funky purists (not sure if there is such a thing yet, god I fucking hope not) will think about this Canadian’s take on the style but one can’t deny XI knows his shit in the studio and can work a bassline like a fat kid on an candy bar.

XI and Cuts - K Rock

Sea of change

A wise friend that’s responsible for a large part of a certain three letter Dubstep label once told me not to get too attached to any particular scene built on a of genre of music.

Real speak. Shit fluctuates. It’s just the way things are. Starting out small, tight knit and bursting with creativity. Then a massive growth in numbers and popularity enevitibly establish some sort of blueprint for carbon copying ending with a creative plateau and subsequent decline. During this time, some people bored and end up branching off into splinters often reinterpreting the rules and standards, creativity comes back.

The catalyst to this little rant is the closure of dubstepforum.com yesterday. Without a doubt, the de-facto net discussion board for the genre did a lot for it’s staggering rise in popularity over the last few years. In contrast, some would also argue that it helped fuel a bit of a nasty habit of music by numbers, anthem bashing and close mindedness towards the end of it’s life.

Today, 20,000 plus active users are now without a central source to:

Pro:
Exchange ideas, opinions and experiences

Con:
Exchange ideas, opinions and experiences

Time will tell what the closure does for Dubstep in 2009. My hope is that the change is for the best and producers will stop caring about what next producer A, B & C are thinking and produce some unique, blindingly groundbreaking shit again.

On that note, we’ve included Rusko’s new remix of Kid Sister’s Pro Nails below. Groundbreaking? Stale? The epitome of Dubstep’s cross-over mega genre status?

Who gives a shit.. really. It’s bound to shatter the hardwoods of dancefloor near you and at the end of the day, that’s what it’s all about is it not?.

Kid Sister - Pro Nails (Rusko Remix)

Speaking of cycles, Grime seams to be forging new ground (or mutating rather) as of late. I’m not familiar enough with Grime to make any claims like it died, is dead or is undead like so many before have claimed (rightfully, I doubt it). I can speak from observation though and think it’s pretty safe to say that for the most part, 2008 was a down year for the genre as a whole.

Like with all things cyclical, death in-turn creates something fresh and new with time. Recent experimental mixes on pirate radio station Rinse FM from Spyro and Maximum break down the walls of Grime and mind meld with fragments of emerging music’s to create some sort of lurching nameless beast. Energetic, aggressive and dirty this grime/ungrime/funky sound is the big swinging next shit. Watch for it.

Also included is JME’s new bit Juju Riddim. Meant to post this last week but got tied up and since then it’s been my most played iTunes song by a long shot. Who writes a song about something like this? I’m completely floored by how utterly bizarre and mental these vocals are (in a good way!).

St. Mandrew - Curb Crawlers Mix

We’re absolutely ecstatic to showcase our boy St. Mandrew’s new October mix as an exclusive download this week. Fifty eight minutes deep, the selection boasts a slick blend of late 90’s house, electro, maximal, and minimal that’s bound to leave pupils dilated, clothes soaked and lily whites scuffed.

In the coming weeks,  you can catch St. Mandrew locally at The Social on the 22nd, Strangelove on the 23rd, and for the post 3AM crew, an afterhours in the later part of the month.

Shout’s out to Ja Catering too! (Shown in the background of the photo above). The best place in Toronto for a meal of Jerk Chicken on Rice & Peas with Coleslaw for 2 bucks during lunch hour.

Jaymo On The Grind

Following the massive success of JakZ’s The Power, our friends at Moda are back with their second release on the popular Lincoln club nights imprint offering Moda Music.

Seeing as Moda is already build on a solid foundation of talent, it makes perfect sense they wouldn’t stray far from home for their second release. Jaymo (alongside Andy George) is one of the key players behind the the Moda brand and reinforces his ear for quality with the much anticipated On The Grind.

Still want more?, Jaymo and Andy George are two of the newest DJ’s to be added to the Radio 1 roaster with their show In New DJ’s We Trust airing on the first Friday of each month.

A high quality version of On The Grind backed with a smashing rmx by JakZ can be purchased here.

House Is The Cure

Sorry Kids, no free-pee-threes here. Keep reading and you’ll likey understand my reason for holding back.

House Is The Cure, a non-profit organization founded in 2007 has teamed up with one of our favorite labels Front Room Recordings for a recent 12″ that sees 100% of all net proceeds donated to various charities chosen by the artist behind the tune.

Which artist is behind the tune you ask? Front Room label boss Jesse Rose aka Content of course! Backed with a stellar stripped down refix from Radio Slave, The Tribute offers up that chunky big bottom sophisticated style we’ve come to expect from Rose with rib rattling subs, jackin’ drums and a hint of a UK Funky House inspired conga swing making the original killer on the floor. Radio Slave strip things down a bit further with some stark minimalism and moody vibes for added WOW.

Make sure to BUY this single. If you pirate this, you’re pretty much a massive baby eating douchebag.

Where Were U In 92?

Twelve years old, stealing your dad’s smokes and getting pissed in a park on a bizarre mix of scotch, vodka and peach schnapps? Cooler and slightly older English youth were surely popping pills and ironically benefiting from a turbulent market resulting in a surplus of abandon industrial spaces to be used as party venues.

Hardcore was the score, and in 2008, Zomby brings it back again only this time, there’s been 16 years worth of Grime, Dubstep, Bassline and Jackin’ House in pull influence from.

On the surface, the shuffling break, rave stab and air horn fueled long player hardly resembles the dark minimalism found on Zomby’s previous outings on Hyperdub and Ramp. Dig a bit deeper though and one will pick up on similarities (most notably in his quirky and onorthodox production methods) that make Where were u in 92 equally interesting and desirable as his championed Dubstep 12′’s.
