After messing with Amazonian congas in his Kaav remix and Arabic scales in Tumble, Jan continues his trend in pulling influence from world beats. Only this time we’re privy to timely fusion of Berlin Tech House sensibilities, London based Funky House basslines and Island Soca style rhythmic patterns.

Without question, Jan Driver’s Rat Alert is up there as one of the coolest, most original tunes I’ve heard all year. Take a listen to the file attached to see what I mean. If you’re in it, make sure to buy a full bit-rate stereo version asap. While you’re at it, be sure to pick up Riva Starr’s brand spankin’ new Squash 12″. This label should be supported at all costs!

Starkey’s debut long player entitled Ephemeral Exhibits is set to drop November 24th on the Planet Mu imprint. Available in CD, tripple pack vinyl and digital download format, the LP does an immaculate job at highlighting Starkey’s unique “Philly street bass” sound. Hand picking select elements from dubstep, bassline, hiphop and grime, this LP has it all and we’re lucky enough to have been sent a sneak preview of Ephemeral Exhibits with Starkbot’s major league slugger of a riddim Pressure. Check the file for a taste of what’s to come. Also watch for Starkey in Toronto on Dec 6th. It’ll be a big one.

Logged into soundcloud this week to find a few gems in our dropbox from Austin Texas native Dubbel Dutch. 

Pulling influence from House and Dubstep alike, Dubbel Dutch’s rework of Loco Dice’s Tech House anthem Pimp Jackson is Talkin’ Now (one of our favorite tunes of 2008) sounds a lot like a mix between Jesse Rose and Jack Beats. Teedering between minimlism, berlin style jackin house, wobbly bass and american ghetto beats.

The quality of Dubbel Dutch’s work is hella imressive too! You can really get behind someone who takes time with their remixes (both on the selection and production sides).

It’s been a little over a year since we first wrote about A1 Bassline’s butt shaker of tune Girl Thing. Closer to the end of this month, the tune will finally see it’s official release on Meal Deal Records and in true mc-value style, it’ll come complete with Christian Martin and Scott Cooper remixes and a Super-Sized fries.

To help promote A1’s forthcoming press, the folks over at Meal Deal recently ran an ever so fashionable remix competition for the 3rd remix to complete the EP pack.

Oh Skream, you really did it this time. Leave it to the wonder kid to flip the script and release gems like this in the midst of hammer time.

Be it through live Disco DJ sets at Greco Roman parties or the nod to Funky House on If You Know, Skream has never been much of a shy guy when expressing his diverse musical influences. 

The long awaited fifth installment in the Skreamizm EP series does an amazing job at showcasing this musician in his prime, expressing himself through experimentation.

The duo known as Justin Long (.dotbleep) and Mazi (Fresh Meat), long known for holding down residencies at the famed Smart Bar, and releasing bangers on labels on Classic, MFF, Junior Boys Own, and Cajual have just dropped two new EP’s under the guise Wasted Chicago Youth for each of their respective labels.

As clean and crisp drum machine riddims duke it out with pitch bent acid basslines, sophisticated funk mingles with cheeky Palin-like winks in the general direction of that big ol booty on the dancefloor.

Catching up on a few emails so I might be a bit late posting this. After cooking up remixes for Roll Deep, Spank Rock and Fat Freddy’s Drop, Kalbata has recently seen two 12″ singles pressed on the mighty Soul Jazz label with vocal backings from the ever classic Warrior Queen and MC Clapper Priest.
Deep and deadly for those who like that bass weight.

October 28th marked the release of Catz ‘n Dogz full length player on Dirty Bird sublabel Mothership.Those that keep an eye out for Mothership releases likely have put together most of the Stars of Zoo album as it’s been available in incrementally updated packs on Beatport for around 3 weeks now.

Even if you already have parts of the release, there’s a good reason to make a second investment in the complete LP. Mothership donates a sizeable portion of its profits to the Detroit Youth Foundation where kids can learn how to make electronic music (and all music) in downtown Detroit.
That, and the LP is bangin’.

A good pal of ours turned us on to the sounds of MHM1 a few weeks back and I’ve been compleatly obsessed with what I’ve heard from him since.

With a background writing graffiti and citing funk-based American electro as a source for influence, the budding Danish house and techno producer is already dripping with cool.. and things only get better when hearing his music.

Sophisticated, funky and above all unique, MHM1 is one to watch out for.. his release Bubububadub will be out on Tartelet Records within weeks.

Last week we were invited by Buzzin Fly records to review the new forthcoming Mix CD Chaos Restored II crafted by Justin Martin. Unfortunately, on request of the label, we’re unable to post any music to accompany the review. Never the less, we’re massive fans of Justin Martin and Buzzin Fly and after having the mix on loop here for almost 5 days, it would be a shame not to give Chaos Restored 2 the love it thoroughly deserves. 

If you’re hungry for MP3’s, I’d suggest messing about with our search feature to see what sort of Martin gems we’ve talked about in the past.

Just over 67 minutes deep, The San Francisco based Justin Martin follows up his acclaimed 2007 Chaos Restored CD with inventive programing that enforces his unique style that we’ve come to love so much.

Bordering on melodic, funky, somber and at times quirky, Martin’s musical world is inhabited with Dancing Bears, fueled on Hyphy and Bass Drum Jungle Music whispering lullabies about the warehouses of Detroit and bright lights of Berlin.

Expect the usual suspects to be heard, music from Loco Dice, Stimming, Matthew Jonson and DJ Koze are nested between JT staples like the Mushrooms, Revox and Elephant Fight re-rubs. Also included is a sneak peak at his forthcoming wobbly bass release My Angelic Demons and rare appearance of the much sought after Radiohead Nude rmx.

Released in June, Crazy Cousin’s refix of Do You Mind isn’t exactly black as night dubplate status anymore. Still, after checking a number of sources, it seams that it was overlooked by the vast majority of underground heads. Which sorta sucks because the tune is absolutely banging and should receive a hell of a lot more love on the dancefloor (stateside specifically).

My uncle used to say another word for Gin was “pantie remover”. He obviously never heard of Crazy Cousins.
