L-Vis 1990: Uk House Mix
On a Tuesday in May

At the moment the “Uk Funky” scene is being flooded on a tsunami scale with “Skank Riddims”. Everyone and there cousinz are jumping on this bandwagon and its heading straight for the cliffs edge. For those who don’t know its kinda like a UK street version of the Macerena with a UK Funky riddim. sound good?!
I have to admit i did like K.I.G when it first dropped and the Migraine Skank is heavy but if you take a look on You Tube today you will see the extent of the problem. Crazy amounts grown men in school halls or on the streets with naf Henry Holland style t-shirts, doing a dance that probably that is more fitting at a 5 year olds birthday party. Here are some examples RingaRoses, Phone Skank, Wagwan Skank. Its getting totally out of hand and consequently this influx is going to be the first point of reference to the majority when talking about UK Funky.
So for my first post here on curb i wanted to bring forward the side of UK Funky that got me so excited when i first heard Marcus Nasty spin on Deja Vu back in april last year. This mix is totally instrumental, full of deep, dark and percussive UK House. (Im calling this UK House Because there certainly isnt any funk to it!) Watch out for huge dubs from Lil Silva and the amazing R1 Ryders tune Rubberband. Not an MC or stupid dance in sight!
Tracklist:
1. Mario – Bloodclart Bass
2. Fingerprints – Test press
3. Hard House Banton – Reign
4. Uncle Bakongo – Bobo
5. N.B Funky – Riddim Box
6. Lighter – Skanker
7. Lil Silva – Funky Pulse
8. Hard House Banton – Sirens
9. R1 Ryders – Rubberband
10. Lil Silva – Different
11. L-Vis 1990 – Run
12. Doc Daneeka – Deadly Rhythm

for those who don’t know the sound of the uk funky ’scene’ is in the main akin to basic 2nd rate masters at work or todd terry circa 1993-5.
it’s much less funky than the old nyc variety & there are very few examples that attain the heights of groove.
the only one i’ve been tempted by was geeneus.
it’s a sad state of affairs when such music is so hyped when it’s absolutely unoriginal. i’m not saying it’s complete shite but it’s not a credible genre in my opinion

that “rd” bro is a douchbaglover but he´s right! i just listended to some kenlou (m.a.w.) and gypsymen (terry) and it just sounds like uk funky… or does uk funky sound like tribal nyc at the start of the 90s? i love that uk funky sound but on the other hand its like heating up some food that only tasted good when it was served fresh the first time! oh, and old people in sportswear doin the lambada dance looks stooopid as hell, you gotta point l. !

aside from the hype, the skanks and all the ice cream bs riddims. there is a lot of tasteful uk funky house to listen to. silva, roska and dj ma1 are all a good start. this scene is deep you, just gotta get into it properly. avoid the ice cream sounding shit and the man dem vocals. instrumentals are much cleaner, but if vocals are your thing…make it a soulful female.
p.s. rd what’s in your handbag?

@RD Art is unoriginal, get over it. @L-Vis Buss it rude boii! But don’t hate the dance…there is nothing wrong with dancing like a 5 year old. And who says age and quality of dancing are relative? Nuff said.

yeah, the vast vast majority of it is derivative, formulaic dross, but I’d argue that it’s a smaller proportion of derivative, formulaic dross than dubstep’s got at the minute. And I found that it only really makes sense once you hear it through a soundsystem like plastic people’s and feel the vibe and see the reaction. It’s worth persevering to find the few gems that are out there, and l vis has taken a lot of the hard work out of it for us with this mix. heavy heavy.
now put two hands on yer head.

Yeah, like anthony said the scene is deep. I agree about the cheese though, I have yet to find non-cheesy uk funky with rapping/toasting over it. This is just my opinion though, feel free to disagree and post examples
