Best Remixes of 2008

On a Tuesday in December

Here’s the first in our best of 2008 posts. I’ve narrowed this down to a short list of fifteen remixes that we really fell in love with over the past year. Some were blogged on here, some where not.

All of these tunes are A1 quality bad ass shit and should be purchased. I’ve dropped down the bitrate on most of the tunes to a respectable level and also included buy links to ensure people support the artists. This is the cream of the crop after all!

Without further adieu, the best remixes of 2008 (in no particular order).

• Idiotproof - The Deacon (Duke Dumont ‘live From Brooklyn’ Remix)

There was a three month period when I’d hear Duke’s remix of Deepgroove and Jamie Anderson’s Made To Play banger everywhere I turned. In the club, in the bar, shopping for shoes, everyone was completely eating up Dukes old school rave stabs and loving every bit of it. [buy

Idiotproof - The Deacon (Duke Dumont ‘live From Brooklyn’ Remix)

• Poxymusic - War Paint (Claude Vonstroke Remix)

Without a doubt, the boys in San Francisco did an amazing job at defining their Hyphy Bass / Tech House sound this year. CVS’s rework of Poxymusic’s War Paint may seam like a bit of a sleeper upon first listen. However with the right set of subs and an ear open to detail, you’ll be finding yourself chanting soulja! in no time. [buy

Poxymusic - War Paint (Claude Vonstroke Remix)

• Nacho Lovers - Acidlife (Eli Escobar Remix)

I know I said that this list was in no particular order, but if I had to choose one to top them all, it would have to be Eli’s refix of Acid Life. Packed full of 303, nods to the old school and wrapped in modern day dancefloor attitude, Escobar’s rework is a recipe for a damn good time. [buy

Nacho Lovers - Acidlife (Eli Escobar Remix)

• Kevin Saunderson - World Of Deep (Jesse Rose Respect To Detroit Remix)

Found on the fourth installment in the History Elevate series. British born, Berlin bred Jesse Rose reworks a classic into modern day while respectfully staying true to the original. There’s not a soul alive that doesn’t react with a ear-to-ear grin when the strings drop in half way through. [buy

Kevin Saunderson - World Of Deep (Jesse Rose Respect To Detroit Remix)

• Late Of The Pier - Bathroom Gurgle (Duke Dumont Remix)

Duke Dumont at it again with a blindingly original remix. Instead of your run-of-the-mill drink-your-face-off club banger, Duke opts to go deep by paying homage to legends like Aux 88 and Drexciya with a Detroit Electro-Techno inspired chest rattler. Just the right amount of junk in the trunk to get the floor moving too. [buy

Late Of The Pier - Bathroom Gurgle (Duke Dumont Remix)

• Burial - Archangel (Boy 8-Bit Edit)

Technically released in the last week of 2007, we’ll let it this one as slide as a 2008 release as it didn’t really make the rounds online until January / February. Boy 8-Bit’s rework of Burial‘ s anthem Archangel was by far one of the better “edits” I’ve heard all year. To boot, tt and does wonders in the dance despite somewhat chilled-out origins.

Burial - Archangel (Boy 8-Bit Edit)

• TRG - Broken Heart (Martyn’s DCM Remix)

You can’t really deny the huge push forward Dubstep music made this year. Leading that charge we find the Washington DC based Martyn. Banking on years of experience releasing soulful dnb and stripped down techno, Martyn is at the forefront of Dubstep’s next evolution in sound. I think you’d be hard pressed to find a best of 2008 remix anywhere that has not included this tune. [buy

TRG - Broken Heart (Martyn’s DCM Remix)

• DJ Technic - Gabryelle (D-Malice Refix)

Arguably one of the biggest tunes in the emerging UK Funky scene. Fueled on rolling bass, voodoo riddims and moody strings, Gabryelle certainly sticks out in the mix. Much like the early days of Grime, there’s some really raw and pissed off true emotions felt here. You can almost hear how disgruntled with life he was feeling when this was made. [buy

DJ Technic - Gabryelle (D-Malice Refix)

• Boy 8-Bit - Suspense is killing me (Drop The Lime Remix)

A monstrous sub bass stormer from the NYC heavy bass king. Aside from being one of my favorite remixes of 2008, this one might very well go down as one of my choice Drop the Lime tunes ever. The perfect balance between LFO warbble and electro beats. [buy

Boy 8-Bit - Suspense is killing me (Drop The Lime Remix)

• Curses! - What I Need (Dexplicit Remix)

When talking about 2008, it’s sort of necessary to bring up Bassline. Although our interest in the genre has fizzled a bit in recent months, Dexplicit’s remix of Curses epic What I Need still stands out as one of this years best productions. Sitting on a trailer load of subs and a vintage drum machine kit, this one still does damage in the dance. [buy

Curses! - What I Need (Dexplicit Remix)

• Water Lilly - Shake A Leg (Jokers Of The Scene Remix)

Somewhere between 90’s techstep drum and bass, thrash electro and 90’s Beltram Techno. That’s the only way I can describe the sound of JOTS massive hoover bass pressing over Water Lilly’s Mental Groove hit Shake A Leg. This one was a staple around CCHQ for months on end. [buy

Water Lilly - Shake A Leg (Jokers Of The Scene Remix)

• AC Slater - Jack Got Jacked (Jack Beats Remix)

The reaction that Jack Beats booming delayed tom toms gets in the beginning of this tune on a dancefloor is un-bloody-real. I honestly think that the remix would have been a charter with just the toms alone but nonono, Jack Beats take it one step further with some tweaked out wobble bass and shuffle drums. [buy

AC Slater - Jack Got Jacked (Jack Beats Remix)

• Nina Simone - Sinnerman (Luciano Edit)

Although it wasn’t technically “released” this year, Luciano’s edit of Sinnerman (long kept under lock and key) made it’s appearance online in 2008 and we couldn’t be happier. I must have listened to this tune a thousand times over this year. It’s dripping sex appeal in the most hypnotizing way possible.

Nina Simone - Sinnerman (Luciano Edit)

• Kid Sister - Pro Nails (SMD Remix)

Definitely one of our favorites that found it’s way into a few mixes thought the year. I’m surprised more people didn’t give this remix the love it deserves when it was released (especially the Dubstep heads). Fans of Skull Disco, Apple Pips and Hessle Audio take note, this one should be right up your alley (surprisingly). [buy

Kid Sister - Pro Nails (SMD Remix)

• Paleface & Kyla - Do You Mind (Crazy Cousins Remix)

UK Funky’s anthem of the year. Do You Mind moving butts in the dance, did more for popularizing Funky in 2008 than any PR, blog coverage, etc etc ever could. There’s still many in North America unaware of the popular UK sound. This will surely change in 2009 and without a doubt;  Crazy Cousins can be thanked for laying the foundation. [buy

Man, i totally concur with the comments above. No hyperbole - the best post I’ve read or listened to on a music blog… ever.

Thank you so much guys for the time and love that has gone into putting this collection together.

Especially feeling Luciano’s Nina Simone remix, D-Malice, Martyn (of course!), and Claude Von Stroke (which I believe you played in your Hype.fm show a while back - I spent ages trying to track it down but no luck at the time).

Bigup, and a big 2009 to you.

who took the picture of the hands and the ceiling?

That “Gabryelle” remix from D-Malice is a tough one to track down. The original tune is crap (from 2005), but this one bangs. Thanks.
